Food Service Assistant
Title: Food Service Assistant
Qualifications: 1. Must be able to read and write English; to do simple arithmetic; be able to follow oral and written directions
2. Must have the capacity to grasp and adjust to new and changing situations
3. Completion of eighth grade as minimum
4. Ability to perform moderate physical work efficiently with continuous standing
Reports To: Food Service Manager
Job Goal: Performs assigned tasks in food preparation and services in designated areas under the direct supervision of the food service manager
Mission and Goals
- Works with the Superintendent, Food Service Manager, and those who he/she supervises to articulate and promote the school system's vision of learning and teaching
- Monitors and evaluates progress toward accomplishment of system goals and objectives
- Uses student data to identify program needs
- Develops goals, objectives, programs, and operations that are consistent with school system vision, mission, and goals
- Ensures that unit and program plans are consistent with the system's strategic plan
- Organizes daily, monthly, and yearly schedules to facilitate learning and teaching in the schools
- Communicates high expectations of students, staff, and parents/guardians
- Creates, identifies, encourages, and supports innovative ideas that in turn support learning and teaching in the school
Performance Responsibilities
- To perform a variety of cooking duties in the cafeteria as assigned by the manager
- To prepare, season, and cook school lunch meals and/or snacks according to the prescribed techniques recommended
by the Child Nutrition Division, State Department of Education, Local Supervisor, and Unit Manager
- To review centralized menus and prepare amount determined by unit/cafeteria manager
- To procure food stuffs from refrigerator, freezer, or dry storage area to meet specified time frame for preparation and meal service
- To measure and mix ingredients according to recipes, using a variety of kitchen utensils and equipment supplied in the unit/cafeteria. Bakes, roasts, broils, and steams according to recipe directions, using the suggested equipment supplied in the unit/cafeteria
- To prepare cold foods such as salads, sandwiches, beverages, etc., according to menu and recipe suggestions
- To comply with written and/or oral instructions concerning type and quantity of foods to be prepared and size portions
- To handle food and meals in storage according to sanitary procedures
- To inform unit/cafeteria manager of food stuffs with possible deterioration presence
- To perform daily, weekly, monthly, and annual cleaning assignments throughout cafeteria and dining area as determined by the unit/cafeteria
- To keep daily record of food stuffs prepared and reports amount to unit/cafeteria manager
- To set up the serving line for meal service following unit/cafeteria manager's recommendation
- To follow cashier operating procedures when applicable
- To meet customers with prompt and courteous service
- To inform unit/manager of any irregularities within the unit/cafeteria, including food quality
- To participate in the district staff development program
- To specialize in job duties according to the requests of the unit/cafeteria manager
- To perform job duties within working schedule
- To prepare trays to assure that foods are properly apportioned and attractively arranged
- To tend and load machines that clean food service items, or hand washes items that are not machine washable
- To follow rotation procedures (first in-first out) on all inventory items
- To perform related duties as requested by unit/cafeteria manager and/or supervisor
- To monitor serving line during meal service to assure proper food quality, food temperature, serving size, appearance, safety and overall tray accuracy
- To monitor serving line during meal service to assure compliance with school's student schedules
- To perform related duties as requested by local supervisor
- To stand and walk most of work day
- To reach, carry, push, bend, and handle, items weighing up to 50 pounds when performing duties
- To hear and speak to communicate with customers, other workers, and supervisors
- To have near visual activity and color discrimination for judging appearance, condition, and attractiveness of foods and displays
- To work inside
Terms of Employment: Ten, eleven, or twelve month year. Salary and work year will be established by the Board.
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
