School Nurse

 

Title: School Nurse

Qualifications:                    

  1. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  2. Possession of a current Mississippi license to practice as a registered professional nurse
  3. Three years experience as a registered professional nurse, preferable in public health nursing

Job Goal:     To provide the fullest possible educational opportunity for each student by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the district schools

Reports To:  Superintendent of Education, the Deputy Superintendent, and/or the Superintendent’s designee

 

Missions and Goals

  • Works with the Superintendent and those who he/she supervises to articulate and promote the school system's vision of learning and teaching                                                                                                 
  • Monitors and evaluates progress toward accomplishment of system goals and objectives                        
  • Uses student data to identify program needs                                                    
  • Develops goals, objectives, programs, and operations that are consistent with school system vision, mission, and goals
  • Ensures that unit and program plans are consistent with the system's strategic plan         
  • Organizes daily, monthly, and yearly schedules to facilitate learning and teaching in the schools
  • Communicates high expectations of students, staff, and parents/guardians          
  • Creates, identifies, encourages, and supports innovative ideas that in turn support learning and teaching in the schools 

Performance Responsibilities

  • To serve as a health consultant to parents, pupils and teachers          
  • To provide health counseling and guidance to pupils to promote optimum growth and development       
  • To plan with and assist teachers in teaching units of health instruction to pupils          
  • To participate in the formulation of policies and procedures for the control of communicable diseases within the school, taking into consideration local health department regulations                                                       
  • To interpret these policies and procedures to school personnel, parents and pupils 
  • To participate in planning policies and procedures for emergency care of illness and injury occurring while pupils are under school jurisdiction 
  • To plan for necessary supplies and equipment, both for her needs and emergency care for a delegated person's use
  • To observe the school environment and report health and safety hazards to the school principal 
  • To assist in the development of procedures to assess the total health status of all pupils                           
  • To assume responsibility for screening procedures used in health appraisals 
  • To identify health problems through observations and interviews 
  • To help pupils to develop self-reliance in dealing with personal health and to accept and adjust positively to their physical, mental, and social limitations 
  • To consult with parents regarding the health of their children 
  • To promote and foster intercommunications with physicians, dentist, and community agencies to plan for the well-being of pupils
  • To interpret health, social needs, and resources to school personnel 
  • To conduct and participate in studies of school nursing methods, procedures and service accomplishments and be alert to needs for improvements 
  • To appraise the school health program in terms of meeting pupil health needs
  • To participate in workshops and studies related to various aspects of the total school health program
  • To perform such other duties and assume such other responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent, Federal Programs Director, and/or the Superintendent's designee

 

Terms of Employment:   Salary and work year will be established by the Board

 

Evaluation:    Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
